About
Mitra Parvizad Tredway's lifelong relationship with yoga began at the age of thirteen in her native Iran. Encouraged by her eldest brother, a martial arts teacher who recognized the value of mindful movement and discipline, she discovered a practice that would become both her vocation and her way of life.
By the age of seventeen, Mitra was already teaching yoga classes in Algeria. Since then, she has devoted more than forty years to the study, practice, and teaching of yoga, inspiring countless students through her depth of knowledge, compassionate presence, and unwavering commitment to personal growth.
Her foundation is rooted in Iyengar Yoga, with its emphasis on alignment, awareness, precision, and the therapeutic use of props. Throughout her journey, she has studied with a wide range of respected teachers and institutions, including the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco, Auroville, India, and Feathered Pipe Ranch. She is a certified yoga instructor and remains a dedicated student, continually expanding her understanding of yoga's many dimensions.
Mitra's teaching has evolved into a skillful and intuitive blend of Iyengar, Vinyasa, Restorative, and Yin Yoga. Rather than following a rigid formula, she thoughtfully adapts each class to meet students where they are, creating an experience that is both accessible and transformative. Her ability to observe subtle patterns in movement and alignment, combined with her gentle guidance and genuine concern for each student's well-being, has earned her the trust and affection of students at every level - from complete beginners to seasoned practitioners and yoga teachers.
Students often speak of the unique combination of expertise and warmth that Mitra brings to her teaching. She creates an atmosphere where people feel safe, supported, and encouraged to explore their potential. Her classes are known not only for improving strength, flexibility, and balance, but also for cultivating self-awareness, resilience, and inner peace.
Based in Santa Cruz, California, Mitra teaches locally and leads workshops, trainings, and retreats throughout California, Hawaii, Mexico, India, and Austria. Whether guiding a weekly class, a specialized workshop, or an international retreat, she brings the same wholehearted dedication to helping each student discover greater ease, confidence, and connection through yoga.
When she's not teaching, you may find Mitra near Santa Cruz's Natural Bridges, practicing a headstand against a backdrop of ocean waves or simply enjoying the restorative beauty of nature. She is the proud mother of two daughters and grandmother of four energetic grandchildren, whose love and vitality continue to inspire her every day.
